— What Are They?
“Completas” are traditional Cuban family
meals, a selection of dinner favorites.
Rice and Beans a must at every meal, accompanied
by a flavorful meat, chicken, or fish. A salad and
the essential “Maduros” the sweet plantains,
Cuban bread and of course, a sweet something before
a homemade Café Cubano complete the meal.
Yes….in Cuba dessert is served before the
coffee. Cubans are passionate about their coffee.
A Café Cubano is the last thing to pass their
lips.
On the way home from work Mom or Dad would stop
by the neighborhood cook or corner restaurant
and pick up the pre-ordered meal. The family
would have a “complete” nutritious meal
thanks to this cottage industry.
These were the “original” take home
meals long before most of us knew what “take
home meals” were.
